After several decades of Indian Motorcycle’s absence at the American Flat Track, they set themselves the ambitious challenge of returning to win the championship. Indian triumphed in the 1940s and 50s in this discipline, requiring a specific kind of high performance motorcycle. In 2016, they custom designed a motorbike entirely from scratch, from engine to frame. They then developed the concept, formed a technical team and recruited riders.
The Flat Track supreme category requires a 750cc engine, so Indian’s R&D department built a new one. It is a liquid-cooled four-valve-per-cylinder 53 degree V-twin engine. It has a compression ratio of 14.0:1 and delivers 109 hp at 10,000 rpm. While the mapped ignition was given to the British company MBE, the injectors are taken from the Scout, as are the sprockets for the gearbox, which has been reduced to four speeds and is controlled by a machined aluminium drum. The air filter housing was engineered with particular care to ensure fresh air pressure stability at the injection.
Three riders were chosen to represent Indian Motorcycle: “Flyin’” Bryan Smith, 33 years old, 2016 GNC Champion, gold medallist at the 2015 X Games and 29 times wins during his career; Brad “The Bullet” Baker, 23 years old, 2009 Pro Singles Champion, 2011 GNC Rookie of the Year and winner of the 2013 Superprestigio Dirt Track in Spain; and Jared “Jammer” Mees, 30 years old, 4 times winner in 2009 2012, 2014 and 2015 and 2016 vice-champion, gold medallist at the 2015 X Games and 24 wins in championship during his career.
3 RACES, 3 WINS
The American Flat Track Championship is a really long, 20-race event. It kicked off at the well-known Daytona race track in March and, much to everyone’s surprise, Jared Mees and Bryan Smith came in with a 1-2 finish, taking the two Indian Scout FTR70s to the top of the podium for their first AMA Championship race.
The second race in Atlanta confirmed the performance of the FTR750 and its three riders, who took the podium by storm for a stunning 1-2-3 win.
On 1st April, Bryan Smith and Jared Mees again had a 1-2 finish in Charlotte. Following these three victories in a row, their contenders have plenty to worry about in the next championship races.
