After three good days on the salt of Bonneville, we had our last meal in Wendover and walked out of the Salt Flats Café to our bikes. Monti was on his beautiful red Chieftain Dark Horse, and I was riding my Sport Chief. Our mates Jack and Stacia had a couple more days in town, so we hugged and said our goodbyes, all knowing we’d see each other again before too long. Monti and I tightened our cinch straps and pointed our bikes east toward Salt Lake City. Monti had spent a lot of time in Utah growing up, so he was happy to play tour guide.

Riding out of Salt Lake City, the only really bad option is the most direct one. Take your time, soak it up, and try to get lost if you can. We were only on the interstate for twenty minutes before cutting east at Spanish Fork and moving south along Highway 89. Rolling hills of green, cliffs of orange and red rock, lakes, rivers, and ponds interspersed — twisty roads inspired spirited riding, but the scenery demanded time and attention.

I’m not a religious man, but it’s hard to call this anything other than God’s country. It’s just otherworldly; like another planet compared to the urban jungle of Los Angeles that we were heading back to.

Despite having over 4,000 miles on my new Sport Chief, I hadn’t done any major trips. I wasn’t worried, and the Sport Chief proved I had no reason to be. “Sport” is often the opposite of “touring,” but here, the bike did both very well: long miles of straight highway were eaten up like a snack and twisty canyon roads gave the bike a real chance to shine, even with my luggage strapped to the back. Monti was all smiles, singing in his helmet and cruising along on his Chieftain Dark Horse, but it was no surprise that he was only a little ways behind me in the canyons, as well.

Rain started to hit as we neared Bryce Canyon, but we weren’t going to wait, so we just plowed on through. As I write this, the trip was a few weeks back, but I hardly remember the cold and the wet. The views? I still see those like a photograph in my mind.
In the National park, we hit every vista we could and just sat there in silence. Rain and thunderclouds in the distance prompted our departure. I could have sat on that ledge looking down at red rock spires for hours longer, but luckily, the ride out was a slow transition back to civilisation, crossing through beautiful mountains and insane red rock cliffs before we rolled into Cedar City. We pulled into Cedar City and sat on the corner of the gas station for half an hour watching the sunset over the mountains. We still had 170 miles to get to Las Vegas and temps were dropping quickly, so the rest of our ride would be blasting highway miles and getting it done. We just sat in silence without acknowledging it … melancholic … we both knew it without talking to each other .... tomorrow was the day to return home.

Sébastien and Olivier enjoy travelling as much as they do their Indian Roadmaster and Chieftain Dark Horse; they’re just back from an unforgettable summer road trip in Iceland. It took some planning: the country is full of extremes, even in summer. Sébastien told us the story.

I set off from Angers on my beautiful Roadmaster on Friday August 8. We quickly covered 1800km (in three 600km stages) across France, Belgium,
Germany and Denmark.
On the morning of the 12th (after taking the time to enjoy a great day in the magnificent resort town of Løngstrup) I boarded the MS Norröna, a Smyril-Line ferry. Boarding on Deck 4 was very straightforward, even for a very heavy bike. After carefully strapping down the machine (make sure to bring your own straps) I found my 9-bunk cabin. After 60 hours and a very choppy voyage of just under 1600km across the North Atlantic, at last the east coast of Iceland and the port of Seyðisfjorður came into view. It was very exciting when my wheels hit the Icelandic soil on July 14. A few hundred metres further on, I met up with my best friend Olivier and his Chieftain Dark Horse, and we set off on our first stage towards the south along the winding roads bordering the eastern fjords. Our plan was to travel all the way round the island in two weeks and try and see as much as we could along the way.

When you reach Iceland – a land of Vikings, legends, ice and fire – as my friend Olivier says you have to be ready for visual overload! Everything’s a source of wonder; even with photos, details, and stories it’s hard to really do justice to the amazing variety of extraordinary landscapes we passed through.
If you make the journey, you’ll see the mountains around the eastern fjords plunging into the sea; ride alongside black sand beaches that stretch as far as the eye can see; cross broad deltas, work your way through huge moss-covered lava fields and flows, and pass the base of glaciers and their glacial lakes where blue icebergs float as if you were at the poles; you’ll travel roads winding through dry landscapes that look like they belong on the moon, amid deserts of rock and ash. Your bike will take you along the foot of looming mountains, barely slumbering volcanoes, and outlandishly coloured geothermal fields with smoke spiralling from below. You can stroll along the fault line between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. From the edge of the summit craters of some of the volcanoes, you can glimpse the turquoise lakes within – and be mesmerised by the roaring power of the country’s waterfalls.

You’ll undoubtedly be wearing your Gore-Tex gear, with padding and protection. Bring warm gloves and underwear – the average temperature is 13°. You get used to it very quickly, but sometimes it can get as low as 7° and be very damp. You need to be prepared for it to be raining throughout your stay. If you’re ready for something a little more challenging, take your tent – but watch out for the wind, which can be very strong at times. Bear in mind you’re in the middle of the North Atlantic, 300km from Greenland and at the edge of the Arctic Circle! On July 28 we boarded the ferry to return home and felt it was over far too soon. To make things last that bit longer we stopped off for three days on the Faroe Islands, where we enjoyed more fabulous views on our rides!
This archipelago is quite simply fantastic; you really have to see it for yourself. The 1800km trip back along the motorway from Hirtshals to Angers wasn’t exactly unforgettable, but it was all part of the experience! The extreme heat made it a long, tough ride, and we were sad that our wonderful road trip would soon be over. By August 4, we were back in our village – and it took some time for us to digest everything we’d seen and done!”

Last February, it seemed the rainy winter would never end.I was sick of glumly staring at my Chief Vintage, sitting unused in the garage, and decided to search online for a motorcycle rental company somewhere sunny. I came across a place in Spain, 25C°, with almost the entire Indian range available! A hundred and fifty euros later, I had a ticket for a direct return flight to Malaga.

The guy from the Indian rental company very kindly offered to pick me up at the airport, since his business ZM-Moto was only 10 minutes away. Bernard introduced me to his team and explained that he has a permanent roster of 26 models available for hire, but some of them were already rented out at that time.

My Chieftain Limited was ready for me. I only had a few days, so I hopped in the saddle right away and after a quick pitstop at my hotel, I headed out to the back country. What a joy it was to ride in that temperature! The Chieftain easily handled the winding roads, which sometimes got very steep and narrow, without a murmur of complaint. I marveled at the natural beauty of the landscapes. With no particular itinerary in mind, I found myself riding through a biker’s paradise. After 140 km it was time to return to the hotel, and 50 km later the GPS had brought me there safely.
The following day I set out for another ride along the coast, with the Mediterranean Sea on my left, before turning inland towards the mountains and the picturesque little villages. The people I came across were welcoming, gathering around the Chieftain outside the roadside cafes every time I took a break.

Bernard and his partner organization, BikerTours Andalusia, suggested I join their guide for the next two days along with a group of seven other Indians. It was more than I could have hoped for!

The guide led us through protected natural reserves and along routes that I never would have discovered on my own. The views as we rode along among the Sierra’s high passes were absolutely breathtaking. In between the panoramic vistas, we’d stop off now and then to enjoy sampling some local foods and other products. For two days I was living a dream, without having to worry about finding my way, just following the guide as we rode through forests to upland lakes, traversing plantations of olive and almond trees. The scenery was incredibly beautiful, and I especially enjoyed the mild climate.
Those happy days came to an end and I had to hand back my Chieftain, with 937 kilometers on the clock, before returning home to the gray skies. I already knew for sure that I’ll be back as soon as I can.

Thanks to everyone at ZM-Moto (zm-moto.com) – Bernard, Heiko and Janine – who were all super-attentive and helpful, and thanks to our guide DJ from Bikertours Andalusia (bikertouren-andalusien.de) for those fantastic routes and for sharing their knowledge of the Andalusia region.

The editorial team at India’s popular motorcycle magazine XBHP doesn’t shy away from a challenge when they’re asked to put a bike through its paces, no matter how testing the conditions.

After so many plans were disrupted by two years of Covid, the guys at XBHP got back into the groove with a long journey through the high mountain region of Ladakh in the Himalayas of northern India.
The average altitude in Ladakh is over 3,000 meters and to reach the remote valleys of Zanskar in the south, and Nubra in the north, you have to ride along one of the world’s highest passable roads and tracks through the Kardung Pass at 5,359 meters.
In the face of such extreme and highly unusual conditions – the stuff of dreams for every adventurous globetrotter – XBHP’s editorial team decided to go with the FTR Rally. Here they tell us the tale...

“We’d ridden the Indian FTR a lot and we know how well it performs. But Ladakh is a region that can bring even the best of machines to its knees. Whatever bike you pick, Ladakh is a real gamble. But after nearly 2,600 km of riding it through every kind of weather condition you can imagine, we can confidently report that the FTR wasn’t a gamble – far from it!

The FTR has everything you could ever want when it comes to highway riding: lots of power, great stability, appealing and comfortable ergonomics, and most importantly, cruise control! No matter how much you love riding a motorbike, highways can be exhausting. The FTR’s cruise control is perfectly tailored and very easy to use.
The engine is nice and placid, with minimal vibrations and a soft rumble from the exhaust that not only keeps you alert, but also gives a good indication of the power you have control of in your right hand.
On winding roads the FTR's suspension stays nicely supple, but it’s on the corners that it really comes into its own and allows you to let rip. Road handling feels very good and the brakes are simply excellent to contend with all eventualities. We've never been short on praise for the way the geometry and design of the chassis come together on this bike to make it one of the best handling models on the market.

After the smooth tarmac, what we were about to encounter was perhaps one of the hardest tests ever, both for man and machine. As we got closer to Ladakh, there were no roads for stretches of several kilometers. All there was, was a treacherous track of dust and gravel, scattered with lots of water crossings. Even the best of these roads was narrow and very winding, lined with rocky hillsides on one side and canyons on the other.
The Indian FTR isn’t a full -fledged adventure bike, but once again, it surprised us. It did very well on those precarious roads and tracks, with the option of deactivating the ABS when conditions permitted so you could just go hell for leather!
The power of the engine is colossal and once you get the hang of staying out of skids, riding becomes a real pleasure and is manageable whatever driving mode you’ve chosen, Rain or Standard. Imagine what the Sport mode could do! Rest assured, that can also be deactivated – and that's when the Indian FTR really comes into its own, freed from its electronic shackles.
Overall, the Indian FTR is a capable bike. But the more time we spend with it and the further we push it, our love for it just grows stronger and stronger. It's not an all-around machine, but in the right hands the FTR Rally comes out a winner in almost every domain.”

By Joe Dryden, professional stunt rider

Feeling the bike move as you lean into a turn, hearing the pegs scrape just a bit—for many of us,
it’s the best part of riding. And the more confident and experienced you get, the better it becomes. That’s why we asked Joe Dryden, a professional stunt rider (who, in his free time, rides an Indian Chieftain) for some tips. You may not ever be chased by Keanu Reeves like Dryden was in John Wick 2 (or have to fight Reeves while he’s on horseback and you’re on a motorcycle, like Dryden did in John Wick 3), but at least you’ll have even more fun the next time you find yourself on a twisty road this fall.

Look where you want the bike to go, not where it is
“Focus on the farthest point through the corner that you can see. Look there and your bike will follow. And don’t be afraid to use the whole lane, especially as you link turns.”

Keep your speed
“You never want to throttle into a corner, but you also don’t want to be totally off the throttle. Speed should be consistent. That means being aware of engine braking, too. If you’re hard off the gas at high rpms, the bike will engine brake and you won’t get a smooth entry into the turn.”

Push your bars for turns
“You’ve got to understand counter steering, which is when you push the inside bar and pull on the outside bar. It makes cornering much easier, especially with big bikes. You don’t have to fight the bike. Instead, you can relax. A relaxed rider is a good rider.”

Get the right tires
“There is a reason some tires are more expensive than others. It makes an unbelievable difference. And make sure they’re at the correct pressure.”

Learn before you turn
“You have to practice. Don’t try to learn as you go. I recommend finding an open space, like a parking lot, where you can push your bike around and learn what it can do. Start a big-radius circle at five to ten miles an hour. Tighten up until you feel the floorboard touch and then back off of it. You need to know what that feels like.”

BONUS LESSON FROM A STUNT RIDER: WHAT TO DO IN A CRASH, FROM A MAN WHO CRASHES ON PURPOSE
Even the safest drivers can be in accidents. If you find yourself in a situation where you’re going down, Dryden’s biggest piece of advice is to let go of the bike. “People hold onto the bike for way too long,” he says. “Once you get close to making contact with the pavement, you need to let go. The pavement will do the work and pull you off. When I crash for a scene, my main priority is making sure I don’t get tangled up in the bike.”

Sinje Gottwald and Kinga Tanajewska first met on the Silk Road in Tajikistan. Three years later, they embarked on their first adventure together, Discover Europe – an unforgettable trip that saw Sinje and Kinga explore Europe’s winding roads and breathtaking landscapes on an FTR Rally and an FTR 1200.

From Leipzig to Zagreb.
Kinga and Sinje began their journey at our Indian Motorcycle dealership in Leipzig. They spent the first three days riding through the Czech Republic and Austria, bound for Zagreb. There they met up with a local biker group for a ride into the mountains near Zagreb, which turned out to be ideal terrain for the FTRs. Sinje and Kinga particularly enjoyed the endless series of bends on the winding roads.

From Zagreb to Trogir.
Their next destination was the Plitvice Lakes, Croatia’s largest and oldest national park. It’s an area that will be familiar to all hardcore Winnetou fans, since the legendary films were shot there. The route also included unpaved roads, which both FTRs coped with admirably.

The next day, Sinje and Kinga rode on to Trogir – where sadly they had to part ways again. Coronavirus restrictions prevented Sinje from travelling any further east, so Kinga pressed on alone to Montenegro, while Sinje continued her tour through Europe via Italy.

Bella Italia!
Sinje’s trip to Italy began in Bari, a port city on the Adriatic Sea. From there, she followed the coast before heading further inland to Matera, where she spent the night in a spectacular cave apartment in the Sassi district.
Unfortunately, she had to endure unrelenting rain until Salerno – but the following day’s ride along the Amalfi Coast, with its picturesque scenery and winding roads, offered ample compensation.
After a short detour to Naples and Capri, by the next day she was already en route to Angiona to see its ancient church bells. The high temperatures there made her appreciate her Indian jacket, which helped to keep her relatively cool.
The absolute highlight for Sinje turned out to be Villamagna, a small town fifteen minutes east of Florence. She felt at home at the Affittacamere Podere Di Belforte guesthouse from the moment she arrived.

The wild Balkans
While Sinje enjoyed Italy, Kinga explored the mountains of the Balkans: Durmitor Park in Montenegro, the Albanian Alps, and the lonely mountains of Macedonia. The FTR proved a loyal companion, taking her to the highest mountain peaks and handling any road surface – asphalt or gravel. Back in civilization, she met up with friends old and new. Kinga, who normally rides a fully loaded Adventure Bike, especially appreciated how easy the FTR was to ride. “Despite being a 1200 cc bike, it remains really agile and easy to handle. It’s so much fun cruising through the city, even with luggage.” On her way home, Kinga stopped off at the spectacular Lisine Waterfalls in Serbia before finally bringing her FTR back to Germany, having completed a journey of some 6,000 km.

Sinje’s final leg.
Sinje returned home from Italy via the Maloja Pass in Switzerland, where she ended her tour exhausted but euphoric.
The trip was the best thing that had happened to her since her return from Africa. After three years of traveling the globe, she was afraid she would go crazy in the relative normality of Germany – but this experience in her European ‘back yard’ made her realise that relatively minor adventures can still offer her the freedom she craves.
Her affection for the Rally is obvious in her photos and videos. Whether the ride is through the mountains, on narrow roads, or spanning longer distances, the FTR is pure fun, as well as ensuring excellent comfort and safety, even in the rain, both on-road and off-road. As Sinje sums it up, “I don’t know of any other bike that’s as versatile as the Rally. She mastered every route I asked her to take. Not just because she had to, but because she could.”

Last November, a four-day ride was organized in the southern US for four remarkable female riders, taking them from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to El Paso on the Mexican border. The group consisted of stuntwoman Jolene Van Vugt, artist Darwin Longfellow, gallery owner Ash Rolshoven and actor Lee Dawn Hershey – each of them riding a Scout. They’d never met before they set off, but soon fell into easy companionship as their ride took them along Lake Abiquiu and across White Sands National Park. Follow their adventures in 5 video episodes on YouTube: Scouting America – Indian Motorcycle. You’ll also find pictures of the ride on our Instagram page (@IndianMotorcycle).

Simon – Owner of a Chieftain 2019

I’d handed my old scout over to its rapturous new owner at the beginning of the autumn, and after that I didn’t know what to do with myself. When i’d seen the latest chieftain online, I knew straight away I had to have it, but my Indian dealer had warned me I’d have to wait ‘til early january before I got my new machine.

I’d test ridden the previous Chieftain the summer before and I was sold on the en-gine, which took things to a whole other level than my Scout 1200 – and that was already pretty beefy. But I was looking for bolder, feistier styling. I wanted a bike that reflects my personality, for local rides, but also a bike that can handle distances comfortably and safely, and could carry enough of my stuff for a couple of days away. I was sick of fastening my weekend bag on with bungee cords.
So in November when I saw the design of the new Chieftain, I couldn’t resist! Its sharper contours, the low-slung rear that counterbalances the big 19-inch front wheel, and the Gunfighter seat give it the look of a modern bagger – but without losing the traditional hallmarks of an Indian.

[See image gallery at blog.imrgmember.eu] I’d only been back at work a few days after the Christmas break when the dealership rang to tell me that my Chief-tain had come in two days ago. I was out of the office like a flash, pretending I had an appointment, and headed straight over there!
There she sat, in all her majesty, waiting for me in the middle of the store – a beautiful matte black, with a “SOLD” label stuck to the handlebars and my name written on it. I was like a kid getting his toys under the Christmas tree. I examined it from every angle and ran my fingers all over it, from the handlebars right to the rear mudguard.

In the end my dealer, Iker – who’d been watching me dance around it – said with a smile, “You’re allowed to sit on it, you know, it’s yours!”
He was right, of course, so I swung my leg over and straddled my new bike. I was surprised by the ride height, slightly lower than I’d imagined, but the saddle gives good support. The handlebars were perfectly positioned, and my feet sat firmly forward on the footboards. I pushed the ignition and the dash lit up with a load of digital indicators all around the GPS navigation system. I was amazed. Iker explained all the features to me, including the three ride modes – Tour, Standard and Sport – as well as all the com-bos and functions of Ride Command, that I’d be able to set the way I wanted as I got the hang of them.
We took the bike outside to start it up, and I was thrilled with the sound of the Stage 1 I’d ordered. Rumbling gently at low revs, full and deep as I opened the throttle, it gave the engine a rich, throaty exhaust note that was a joy to hear!
It was Friday night, and getting dark, but even though it was winter in the Basque Country, the weather forecast for the following day was good. So luckily I knew I’d be able to take my new bike out for a ride very soon.
The sun was shining when I set off from San Sebastian with a full tank, my helmet on, and a few layers of clothes under my jacket. I was as happy as I’d been at 14, riding my first 50cc. What a sense of freedom! After ri-ding around the city and along the bay, I took it for a run down the coast. Already in the first few miles, I could feel the huge amounts of torque, the smoothness and wide manageable powerband of the en-gine, which picks up as soon as you open up the throttle, no matter what gear you’re in. I was really impressed. The real magic is that sound that’s so distinctive of big VTwins – the changing notes of the engine as you ride along are almost like a symphony. Steering it around the curves and bends in the road was incredibly easy. I think the 19-inch wheel makes for better handling, because it felt really ba-lanced and fell into the right angle of lean very naturally.
Feeling the tingle in the air, I suddenly re-membered the winter chill. With the tip of my index finger I activated the rise of the power windscreen. What luxury! Now I was completely sheltered. I arrived at Ge-taria where winter had settled in, making everything seem quite still – right down to the deserted fishing boats, hung up on the docks.
I made the most of this break to go through all the Ride Command functions by tapping on the screen and buttons. When I connected my phone to the bike’s Bluetooth®, my playlist came up on the screen as if by magic. All I had to do was hit “play” and crank up the volume – next thing I knew, the sound of Mark Knopfler’s guitar was blasting out of the 100-Watt speakers and wa-king up the neighbourhood!

I shifted into first, the Dire Straits playing in my ears, and turned back towards Zarautz for a warming coffee. There I was, riding the bike of my dreams, and I felt like the hap-piest man alive.
